Why Sodium Battery Recycling Matters

Sodium batteries are gaining traction as a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their cost-effectiveness and material abundance. But like any battery technology, end-of-life sodium batteries must be managed properly to prevent environmental harm and ensure regulatory compliance.

These batteries often contain hazardous materials such as metallic sodium and sodium polysulfides, which can be highly reactive or corrosive. Proper recycling and disposal aren’t just good practice—they’re required by law.

Types of Sodium Batteries We Handle

• Sodium-ion batteries (Na-ion)
• Sodium-sulfur (NaS) batteries
• Sodium-nickel chloride (ZEBRA) batteries

The Sodium Battery Recycling Process

Our sodium battery recycling process is designed around safety, environmental responsibility, and full regulatory compliance:

1. Disassembly & Discharge

Batteries are safely discharged and disassembled into individual cells to neutralize hazardous energy and materials.

2. Packaging & Transport

All materials are packaged in DOT-compliant containers. Shipments are manifested and labeled per RCRA and international standards (UN3292, Class 4.3).

3. Domestic & Overseas Processing

Currently, sodium-based battery recycling mainly available overseas but we also have the ability to recycle in North America. We work with licensed domestic & international recycling facilities to process and reclaim valuable materials such as sodium, sulfur, and polysulfides.

4. Recovery & Certification

Materials like sodium sulfide and elemental sulfur are recovered. You’ll receive full documentation and certificates of recycling upon completion.

Is Sodium Battery Waste Hazardous?

Yes. Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), many sodium battery components—like metallic sodium and sodium polysulfides—are considered hazardous. That means these batteries must be managed according to strict federal regulations. Fortunately, we handle all compliance on your behalf, from manifesting to export documentation.
